🏠 England Form and Team News

Taking the time to look at how each team has progressed in a competition is something that we always recommend that our punters do when they are football betting since form is not something that you want to ignore when you are thinking about placing bets on a team to go on and win a match. In fact, we believe in it so much that we’ll now be doing just that in our England vs France prediction!

The French finished at the top of Group D thanks to two victories and a defeat from the three matches that they played in the Group Stage. Their first game of the competition was against Australia, and it looked like there could be an upset on the cards when the Aussies took an early lead, but France showed their quality and went on to win the game 4-1 to claim three vital points. Next up for France was a match against Denmark, and France picked up a 2-1 win in this match, ensuring themselves of a Round of 16 match with one game to spare. Due to the fact that they had already qualified for the Round of 16, Didier Deschamps opted to make wholesale changes to his starting XI, and they went down 1-0 to Tunisia after a pretty insipid performance.

For the Round of 16 match against Poland, France headed into the game as clear favourites and they lived up to this billing by claiming a 3-1 victory. The Polish players did manage to get in behind the French defence at times, but they just lacked the quality to cause any sort of damage. At 1-0, the Poles knew that they were still in the match, but two goals from Kylian Mbappe put the tie to bed. Poland did get a late penalty, and Robert Lewandowski put it away on his second attempt – his first was saved, but Hugo Lloris came off his line, so the penalty was retaken. It was little more than a consolation goal for the Poles though as the final whistle was blown seconds after.

For this Quarter-Final clash against England, France manager, Deschamps, at this moment in time, does not have any injuries that will hinder him in this match. When it comes to suspensions, there are no French players suspended for this game, but if Koundé or Tchouaméni were to pick up a booking in this match, then they will be forced to sit out of the Semi-Final match, should they manage to make it through.

France Starting Lineup

In the game against Australia, France lined up with a 4-2-3-1 formation, and our England vs France prediction expects the same line-up for this game against England. We also think that Deschamps will go for the same predicted XI for this match, so below we have given you our predicted France XI for this Quarter-Final game:

  • H. Loris
  • T. Hernández
  • D. Upamecano
  • R. Varane
  • J. Koundé
  • A. Rabiot
  • A. Tchouaméni
  • O. Dembélé
  • A. Griezmann
  • K. Mbappe
  • O. Giroud

When you take a look at this predicted XI, it really is no surprise that France entered this competition as one of the favourites to win. However, as they showed in their 1-0 defeat to Tunisia, perhaps France does not have the same strength in depth that some of the remaining teams in the tournament have. This might be something that comes back to haunt them at some stage.

France Players to Watch

As we mentioned above, France’s starting XI is one that is full of top-quality players and, in this section of our prediction, we are now going to give you the three French players that we feel you and the English players will have to keep a good eye on at the weekend.

  • Kylian Mbappe: If there is one player that England will be super wary about in the French team, it is Mbappe. At just 23 years of age, the Paris Saint-Germain striker can claim to be one of the best players in the world. His strength, technical ability, and the fact that he has pace to burn is something that makes him a huge nightmare for opposing teams to keep quiet. He is leading the race for the Golden Boot at this year’s World Cup with five goals to his name, and it would not be much of a surprise if he finds the back of the net against England
  • Olivier Giroud: When Karim Benzema was ruled out of the competition before it even got started, French fans would have been wondering whether Giroud would step up to the plate, but it is fair to say that this is exactly what he has done. He has found the back of the net on three occasions at this World Cup, and he is now the leading scorer for his country, with 52 goals in the 117 matches that he has played in. He is great in the air, and if England give him a sniff, he will be ruthless
  • Antoine Griezmann: Not only will England have to try and keep Mbappe and Giroud quiet, but their defenders will also be tasked with ensuring that Griezmann does not get too much time on the ball to pick a pass or get a shot away. Griezmann is the one that pulls the strings for France in attack, but he is also not shy when it comes to finding the back of the net, as is indicated by the 42 goals he has scored for his country. On average, he finds the back of the net every three games, and we are looking forward to seeing him work in tandem alongside Giroud and Mbappe against England’s defence

☍ England Form and Team News

England topped Group B with 7 points from their opening three group matches, scoring 9 goals in the process which is more than they have ever managed to score during the first stage of a World Cup. Their first game of the competition was against a decent Iran side, but England put in an attacking display that made the Iranians look like amateurs, and they walked away with a 6-2 win. Their second match of the competition was against the United States, and England will be the first to admit that their performance in the 0-0 draw was not good enough. The Three Lions entered their final game of the group knowing that only a complete catastrophe would send them crashing out, and no such catastrophe arose due to the fact that England picked up a very comfortable 3-0 win against Wales to finish at the top of the group.

By finishing at the top of the group, England set up a date with Senegal, the current African champions, and some sloppy play in the first half an hour could have seen them behind. However, Jordan Pickford in the England goal was in no mood to be beaten, producing a stunning one-handed save from close range to keep Senegal out. Not long after, England broke on the counter, and the brilliant Jude Bellingham squared for the much-maligned Jordan Henderson to sweep home from 12 yards. This goal eased the pressure on the English players, and they scored a fantastic breakaway goal with half-time approaching to all but put the game to bed. The second half of the match was like a training session at times, and England put some gloss on the scoreline by putting away a third.

Due to the scoreline, the England manager, Gareth Southgate, was able to give some of his key players a bit of a rest, so he has no injury issues to contend with for the big match against the French. What about suspensions? Well, they do not have any suspension issues ahead of this match – in fact, incredibly, they are yet to pick up a single yellow card at the tournament. Therefore, the only way that any England player will miss a potential World Cup Semi-Final is if they end up getting sent off against France on Saturday evening.

England Starting Lineup

Against Senegal, Southgate lined up his England side in a 4-3-3 formation, and due to the attacking talent that France have at their disposal, our England vs France prediction has it that he will stick to the same formation for this game. What about his predicted starting XI? Well, we would be very surprised if Southgate opted to move away from the XI that started the Round of 16 game, so this is our predicted England XI for the Quarter-Final:

  • J. Pickford
  • K. Walker
  • J. Stones
  • H. Maguire
  • L. Shaw
  • J. Bellingham
  • D. Rice
  • J. Henderson
  • B. Saka
  • H. Kane
  • P. Foden

When it comes to strength in depth, it is fair to say that this England team has plenty. If some changes need to be made in order to try and change a game or see a game out, then Southgate can call on the attacking talents of Grealish, Rashford, Maddisson, or Wilson or the defensive capabilities of Phillips, Coady, or Trippier.

England Players to Watch

So, England have plenty of talent at their disposal, and below you can find three England players to keep an eye on when England take on the French at the weekend:

  • Harry Kane: The Spurs striker often drops deep for England which is something that irks many England fans, but with three assists to his name and an involvement in England’s crucial first goal against Senegal, he has shown that he is a quality playmaker as well as a goalscorer. Kane was yet to score at the World Cup, but a fantastic finish yesterday gave him his 7th goal in 10 World Cup appearances. He really is one of England’s best players, and the French defence will be wary about giving him too much space to work in
  • Jude Bellingham: Those in the football world are running out or superlatives for the 19-year-old, and against Senegal he was the best player on the pitch. He was completely bossing the midfield, and if Lionel Messi had done what he did for England’s second goal of the game just before half-time, football fans would still be talking about it. That was probably one of the best counter attacking goals that you will see at the Qatar World Cup. We cannot wait to see how he plays against a talented French side on Saturday evening
  • Kyle Walker: On Saturday evening, Kyle Walker will have one of the most unenviable tasks in world football, which is to try and keep Kylian Mbappe quiet. While most defenders struggle against Mbappe due to his speed, Walker does not have this issue due to the fact that he is really quick himself. Walker has managed to keep Mbappe quiet before for Manchester City against PSG in the Champions League, and Southgate and anyone of an English persuasion will be hoping that he can do the same thing once again on Saturday
