🏠 Netherlands Form and Team News

It is always a wise move to take the time to analyse how a team has been playing before you go ahead and do some football betting as form will obviously play a huge role when it comes to who will go on to win. And this is what we’ll now be doing in our Netherlands vs Argentina prediction.

The Netherlands were in Group A and they qualified for the Round of 16 with two wins and a draw to their name, topping the group with 7 points, a point above Senegal in second place. Their first match of the competition was against Senegal, the Champions of Africa, and two mistakes from Mendy helped the Dutch to a comfortable 2-0 win in the end. Their next game of the competition was against South America’s Ecuador, and the South Americans put in a very solid performance to get themselves a deserved 1-1 draw, despite the fact that the Netherlands took the lead with just five minutes or so on the clock. In their final match of the Group Stage, they took on the hosts Qatar and won 2-0 to book themselves a Round of 16 game against the USA.

The Dutch went into their Round of 16 clash with the USA as strong favourites, and they came out on top 3-1 to book themselves a spot in the Quarter-Finals against Argentina. While the score would suggest that this was a very comfortable win for the Dutch, it was not actually the case. The Americans caused the Netherlands plenty of issues, but a few moments of poor defending cost them dearly in the end. At one stage, with the score at 2-1, the Americans had the Dutch on the backfoot, but they left Dumfries completely free at the back post, and the game was put to bed.

For this Quarter-Final match against Argentina, Netherlands manager, Louis van Gaal does not have any injuries or suspensions to his key players, and he will hope that it stays this way because they are going to need all of their best players in order to overcome Argentina. Yellow cards are wiped out after this stage, so if Ake, de Ligt, Koopmeiners or de Jong pick up a yellow in this game, they will not be available for selection for the semi-final match, should the Netherlands make it that far.

Netherlands Starting Lineup

Louis van Gaal favours a 3-4-1-2 formation, and we do not see him moving from this formation for this clash against Argentina. We also do not think that he will make changes to his playing XI that beat the USA in the Round of 16. Therefore, our Netherlands vs Argentina prediction has the Dutch lining up as follows:

  • A. Noppert
  • N. Ake
  • V. van Dijk
  • J. Timber
  • D. Blind
  • F. de Jong
  • M. de Roon
  • D. Dumfries
  • D. Klaassen
  • C. Gakpo
  • M. Depay

If these players are struggling against a talented Argentina side, then van Gaal does have plenty of quality that he can call off the bench. This includes the likes of de Ligt, de Vrij, Bergwijn, Janssen, and Frimpong.

Netherlands Players to Watch

The Dutch squad is full of talent, but below we have given you three players that we think you should keep a pretty close eye on during this quarter-final game against Argentina.

  • Memphis Depay: The Barcelona striker has only just returned from a long injury, but he was fit enough to start against the USA, and he showed his quality by banging in the opener with just ten minutes on the clock. He is lethal in front of goal, and if the Argentinian defence give him a sniff, then he will not need a second invitation to slam the ball into the back of the net. He has a really good scoring record for his country, having scored 43 times in 85 appearances for the Netherlands
  • Virgil van Dyke: We all know that goals are needed to win matches, not conceding too many is also obviously really important, and the Netherlands will never concede a lot due to the fact that they have van Dyke, one of the best defenders in the world, playing for them. The Liverpool defender is always calm and collected and not many strikers ever manage to get past him. He can also be a threat at set-pieces thanks to his strength and height, so a diminutive Argentina side will be wary of his presence at corners and free-kicks around the edge of the box
  • Cody Gakpo: There have been some standout youngsters in this tournament, and Gakpo just so happens to be one of those. He is comfortable using both of his feet, has plenty of pace to burn, and can get by defenders with ease due to his dribbling skills. In addition to this, he also knows where the back of the net is as can be seen from the fact that he has scored three goals already in this competition. We look forward to seeing how the youngster does against the steely defenders from Argentina

☍ Argentina Form and Team News

Argentina’s World Cup got off to a start that nobody ever expected as they were downed 2-1 by Saudi Arabia – we doubt there were many football bettors that put their hard-earned money on Argentina losing their opening game against such a team, but that has been the beauty of this World Cup. Due to this defeat, Argentina entered their second game of the World Cup knowing that a defeat would eliminate them from the competition, but they picked up a 2-0 win against Mexico to keep their dreams alive. Their final match of the Group Stage was against Poland, and Argentina knew that a win would see them top the group, while a defeat would see them eliminated. They went on to win the game 2-0 and book a Round of 16 tie with Australia.

Many thought that this would be a proverbial walk in the park for Argentina against Australia, but the Aussies put in a very spirited display and, with a bit more luck, they could have picked up a famous win or at least drag the tie into extra-time. In fact, Argentina will be thanking Australia’s keeper, Matt Ryan, for this as it was his poor touch that gifted Argentina what was ultimately the winning goal. While Ryan will think about that mistake for some time, he should take comfort in the fact that he played a big role in Australia making it that far in the competition.

Lionel Scaloni, the Argentina manager, like van Gaal, does not have any injuries or suspensions to think about ahead of this clash with the Dutch, while M. Acuna and G. Montiel are the two players that are just one booking away from being banned for the semi-final, should Argentina overcome the Netherlands. While Scaloni will not want any of his players to be suspended for a potential last four match, it is safe to say that he has plenty of quality to replace them with.

Argentina Starting Lineup

In their game against Australia, Scaloni went with a 4-3-3 formation, which is exactly what our Netherlands vs Argentina prediction predicts he will go for in this match too. Below you can see the 11 players that we think Scaloni will opt to start with against the Netherlands:

  • E. Martinez
  • N. Molina
  • C. Romero
  • N. Otamendi
  • M. Acuna
  • R. De Paul
  • E. Fernández
  • A. Mac Allister
  • A. Di Maria
  • L. Messi
  • J. Álvarez

If this starting XI is not quite doing it against a strong Dutch team, then Scaloni has a number of top players on the bench that he can bring on to turn the tide. This includes Paulo Dybala, Lisandro Martinez, and Angel Correa.

Argentina Players to Watch

The Argentina playing XI is one that will have quality all across the field, but below are three players that we think you and the Dutch should keep a close eye on at the weekend:

  • Lionel Messi: It would be extremely scandalous of us to speak about Argentinian players and not mention Messi since he is, without a doubt, one of the best players to play this sport. Despite the fact that he is getting on a bit in age now, he still has a lot of quality and he will be very eager to win the World Cup in what will be his last appearance on such a big stage. If Argentina do manage to make it through to the last four, it is safe to say that the little magician will have played a big part
  • Julián Álvarez: He is only 22 years old, but he has shown in this competition that he has what it takes to become one of the world’s best wingers. He already has three goals to his name in this World Cup, and will be confident of coursing the Dutch defence all kinds of issues. With his pace and skill, we are looking forward to seeing how the Netherlands defenders set up to cope with his talent
  • Emi Martinez: The Aston Villa keeper is extremely talented, but he has not had an awful lot to do in their last two matches. It is safe for us to assume that this will not be the case here, and we look forward to seeing how he goes about trying to keep out a talented Dutch attack. The Netherlands will probably try to pump a lot of balls into the box and try to beat the Argentinian defenders in the air, so we look forward to seeing how he does when it comes to claiming crosses and controlling his area

Who Will Win? Netherlands vs Argentina Prediction

When it comes to online sports betting on this big game, who would we decide to out our cash on? Well, this is definitely going to be a really tight game, and it is one of those matches that could end up going either way. However, looking at how both teams have performed up until this point in the competition, our World Cup betting suggestion is to bet on the Netherlands to qualify. This could be a match that goes to extra-time, so we recommend you place money on the Dutch to qualify, rather than betting on them to win within 90 minutes.

Our Netherlands vs Argentina Betting Tips

What are some other World Cup tips that we can give you for this Quarter-Final match? Well, given the quality of both defences, we do not think that this is going to be a high-scoring match, so we would be tempted to recommend that you opt for the under 2.5 goals market if you do not want to put your money on a winner or a team to qualify. Also, if you want to put your money on a player to score, then there is only one player to bet on, and that is Lionel Messi.
