England vs Senegal Preview

If you want to tune into all of the action for this match, then you can do so on ITV 1. England fans would probably have preferred that this game was being shown on BBC 1 instead because whenever they are being shown on ITV 1, they usually put in a poor performance.

Below you can see the tables from Group A and Group B, and we recommend that you take a close look at both tables as they can give you a good idea as to how both teams performed and managed to book their spot in the Round of 16. It is a good idea to look at current form and recent results before you do any football betting since form will obviously play a big role in who will come out on top.

Group A:

🏠 England Form and Team News

As can be seen from the table above, England topped their group thanks to two wins and a draw from their free Group B matches. After a big 6-2 win against Iran in their opening game of the tournament, and a draw against the USA in their second, England entered their third and final group game knowing that a draw would see them qualify, while a USA win or a draw would see England topped the group. England ran out comfortable 3-0 winners against Wales, and booked themselves a date with Senegal in the Round of 16. The nine goals that they scored in the Group Stage was the most they have ever scored at this stage of the tournament. In all honesty, it could and should have been more.

For their Round of 16 clash, England manager Gareth Southgate does not have any suspensions or injuries that he has to deal with, although the state of Harry Kane’s ankle has been a bit of a debate for a while now. When it comes to yellow cards and possible suspensions in future games, Southgate also has nothing to worry about because England have an exemplary disciplinary record so far, picking up no bookings in their three group games. He will want this to continue because the last thing he wants if England make it through is to have key players missing due to a suspension.

England Starting Lineup

Against Wales, Southgate opted for a 4-3-3 lineup, and we think that he will opt to go for the same formation in this match against the Senegalese. Below you can see our predicted England XI as part of this England vs Senegal prediction:

  • J. Pickford
  • K. Walker
  • J. Stones
  • H. Maguire
  • L. Shaw
  • J. Bellingham
  • D. Rice
  • K. Philips
  • B. Saka
  • R. Sterling
  • H. Kane

For what it is worth, we would probably start Foden and keep Sterling on the bench, but Southgate has a tendency to start players based off a sense of loyalty and not form, so we will not be surprised to see the Chelsea man play. Also, do not be surprised to see Mount slotted into the starting XI, despite the fact he offers very little to the England team.

⭐ England Players to Watch

The England squad has plenty of talent in it, and below we have given you three players to look out for when England are taking on Senegal:

  • Harry Kane: The Spurs striker might not have found the back of the net in this competition, but he has still proven his worth to this England side by providing 3 top assists, with his best one being the pass to Foden against Wales that gave the ball to Foden on a plate, who happily gobbled it up. At some point, he will find the back of the net, and the Senegalese defenders will know that if they give him an inch, he will take a mile. In the 78 games that he has played for England, he has found the back of the net on 51 occasions
  • Jude Bellingham: He might only be 19 years of age, but he has shown a maturity beyond his years at this World Cup and this is probably due to the fact that he plays regularly for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. There is no doubt that he has a huge future ahead of him, and in a couple of years he could even become one of England’s most important players due to his technical ability and the fact that he can pick a pass. We are looking forward to seeing how he plays in one of the biggest games of his fledgling career
  • Harry Maguire: The Manchester United defender received a lot of stick for his performances for Manchester United before the World Cup, but when he pulls on an England shirt he seems to turn into a totally different player. He has been playing really well for England at this World Cup, and he is always a threat at set pieces due to his ability in the air. He will need to be at the top of his game against a tricky Senegal attack, and we are very interested to see how he goes

☍ Senegal Form and Team News

As you can see from our Group A table above, Senegal finished second in their group behind the Netherlands. Their first game was against the Dutch, and they battled hard but a late goal for the Netherlands saw them end up with nothing to show for their good performance. Their next game of the tournament was against Qatar, and they came out on top against the hosts thanks to a 3-1 win. This meant that they entered their final group game against Ecuador needing to win in order to make it through, and they put in their best display of the competition to win 2-1 and send the young Ecuador team home. They now know that they will be taking on England for a spot in the final eight.

Given that African football teams have not performed that well at World Cups over the years, there were probably not that many football predictions that would have had them to finish ahead of Ecuador in the Group Stage. However, they have shown their talent and have fully deserved their spot in the Round of 16.

Aliou Cissé will have to make one enforced change to his starting XI for this match due to the fact that Idrissa Gueye picked up his second yellow card of the tournament against Ecuador, ruling him out of the Round of 16. When it comes to injuries, he has no injuries to key players, so he will be at least be glad about that. IF N. Mendy, B. Dia, or I. Jakobs pick up a yellow against England, then they will miss their country’s first ever World Cup quarter-final if they manage to make it through.

Senegal Starting Lineup

Against Ecuador, Senegal lined up in a 4-4-2 formation and we are pretty certain that this is the formation that they will use against England. Below is our predicted Senegal XI for this big match:

  • E. Mendy
  • Y. Sabaly
  • K. Koulibaly
  • A. Diallo
  • I. Jakobs
  • I. Sarr
  • N. Mendy
  • I. Ndiaye
  • K. Diatta
  • B. Dia
  • F. Diedhou

Senegal Players to Watch

Below you can find three Senegalese players that you should keep an eye on during their Round of 16 tie with England:

  • Edouard Mendy: If Senegal are going to win this match, then the Chelsea keeper will probably have a big say in their victory. England have a really good attack, so Mendy, who has been capped 28 times by his country, will have to be at the top of his game. Against the Netherlands, he made two mistakes that cost his side two late goals, and a similar performance could see his team get knocked out, so he will hope that he is at the top of his game
  • Ismaila Sarr The one player that the England defenders will be very aware of is Sarr, who currently plays in the second division of English football with Watford. However, he definitely has the talent to be playing in the EPL, and this is probably where he will be when the 2023 February transfer window opens. He has pace to burn and very good ball control, so if he is allowed to run at the England defence, then he could cause plenty of issues
  • Famara Diédhiou: He currently plays in the Turkish league, but the English defenders definitely should not take him lightly. He is fast, strong, and technically gifted and he has found the back of the net 11 times in the 26 caps that he has earned. If he gets isolated against an England defender, then Jordan Pickford could find himself with plenty of work to do. We are looking forward to see how he goes against the English defence

Who Will Win? England vs Senegal Prediction

If you are tempted to do some online sports betting on this Round of 16 match, then who would we recommend you put your hard-earned money on? Well, although England are the red-hot favourites to win this game, we think it will be a closely fought contest with the game being decided by just the one goal. It really depends on the England that turn up – if the England that played Iran shows up, then they should win, but if the England that took on USA appear, then Senegal will fancy their chances of causing a World Cup betting upset. Do not be surprised if this match ends up going into extra-time.

Our England vs Senegal prediction: England to win.

Our England vs Senegal Betting Tips

What other World Cup tips can we give you for this England v Senegal match? Well, Kane is yet to score for England and if you had put a bet on England scoring nine goals in the group stage and Kane not being one of the scorers, you would have made a nice chunk of profit. He is too good not to find the net once again, so maybe it is worth you thinking about putting your money on him to score.
