🏠 Netherlands Form and Team News

As you can see from the Group A table above, the Netherlands topped the group courtesy of two wins and a draw from their three matches. After a win against Senegal in their opening match and a draw against Ecuador in their second match, the Netherlands entered their final group game needing just a point to qualify, and they went on to win the game 2-0 to top the group ahead of Senegal, who picked up a tight 2-1 victory over Ecuador. Many probably would have had the Dutch to finish with three wins from three, but Ecuador played a good game against them and they will have put that result to the back of their minds with their focus firmly on the USA.

For this Round of 16 clash, Louis van Gaal does not have any suspensions or injuries to contend with, but the likes of de Ligt and Ake are both on a yellow card, so if they pick up another booking in this match against the USA, they will miss the Quarter-Final game if the Dutch go on and win. Their coach will be hoping that these two players can keep their discipline since they will be a big miss if they make it through and are not available for selection. However, they do not want to have one eye on the quarter-final stage just yet as this is something that could back to bite them on the backside.

Netherlands Starting Lineup

Louis van Gaal has played with a 3-4-1-2 formation so far in this tournament, and we think that is the formation that he will opt for once again. We do not think he will make any changes to the starting XI that took on Qatar in their final group game. Therefore, they could line up as follows:

  • A. Noppert
  • N. Ake
  • V. van Dijk
  • J. Timber
  • D. Blind
  • F. de Jong
  • M. de Roon
  • D. Dumfries
  • D. Klaassen
  • C. Gakpo
  • M. Depay

Netherlands Players to Watch

Below, as part of our Netherlands vs USA prediction, you will find three Dutch players that you should keep an eye on during this knockout match:

  • Memphis Depay: The Barcelona forward is only just returning back to full fitness, but van Gaal believed he was fit enough to start against Qatar, so we see no reason why he will not start against the USA. Before his injury. the striker had been in fine form for Barcelona, and in 30 appearances for the club he has scored 13 goals. His goal scoring record for the Netherlands is even better, with him having scored 42 goals in 84 appearances for his country. This means that he averages a goal every two games. The USA are solid at the back, but Depay has the talent to cause them all sorts of issues
  • Virgil van Dyke: While goals will win you matches, not is also obviously important, and in van Dyke the Netherlands have one of the best defenders in the world. He is so calm and collected under pressure and strikers need to work extremely hard in order to get past him. The Liverpool player is also dangerous at set pieces due to his height and strength, so the USA players will definitely need to be wary of him during corners and free-kicks or they will see him thumping home a header
  • Cody Gakpo: The 23-year-old has been a shining light for the Dutch at this tournament, scoring 3 goals to give him 6 goals in his first 12 appearances for his country. He is equally talented with both his right and left feet, while he has the dribbling skills and speed to leave defenders in his wake. Also, as is shown by his goal scoring record, he knows how to find the back of the net too

☍ USA Form and Team News

As can be seen from the Group B table, the USA finished in second place in their group behind England with a win and two draws from their three group game matches. They drew 1-1 with a poor Wales team in their first game, played really well and were unlucky not to get a win against England, and went into their final group game against Iran knowing that a win would see them through to the Round of 16, while a draw would leave them reliant on England beating Wales. The USA won 1-0 and England won 3-0, so that meant the USA qualified for the knockout stages and a clash with the Dutch.

Given that football is not one of the major sports in the United States, many football predictions probably would have had them to finish outside of a qualifying spot, but they have a young and talented side with players that play in some of the top leagues in Europe.

Gregg Berhalter, like Louis van Gaal, does not have any injuries or suspensions ahead of this big match against the Dutch, but he does have a number of players who are at risk of suspension should they make it to the Quarter-Finals. In the group stage, Weston McKennie, Sergio Dest, Tim Ream, and Tyler Adams all picked up yellow cards, so they will need to keep their discipline in this match, or risk potentially missing out on one of the biggest games of their careers.

USA Starting Lineup

Against Iran, Berhalter opted for a 4-3-3 formation, and this is the formation that we think he will decide to use in the Round of 16 match. He does not have the same squad depth that the Dutch have, so we believe he will play the same starting XI that beat Iran 1-0, which is:

  • M. Turner
  • S. Dest
  • C. Carter-Vickers
  • T. Ream
  • A. Robinson
  • Y. Musah
  • T. Adams
  • W. McKennie
  • T. Weah
  • J. Sargent
  • C. Pulisic

USA Players to Watch

Below you will find three USA players that you should keep a close eye on in the Round of 16 clash with the Netherlands:

  • Christian Pulisic: There is no doubt that Pulisic is the talisman of this USA team, and he will be crucial if the Americans are to make it through to the Quarter-Finals. He was the goalscorer in their match against Iran and got injured in the process, but he should be fit to play in this next match. The attacking midfielder or winger has been capped 55 times by his country and he has found the back of the net no fewer than 22 times. If the USA do go on to beat the Dutch, he would have played a big role in the win
  • Weston McKennie: The Juventus midfielder made headlines against England not for his performance but because he decided that he wanted to use a photographer as a towel to dry his hands. This was obviously uncalled for, but apart from this mishap, he has been a very important player for the United States during this World Cup. He provides his defenders with extra cover and also has an eye for goal as can be seen from the fact that he has scored 9 goals in his 40 appearances for his country
  • Antonee Robinson: Those who follow the English Premier League closely will know plenty about Robinson since he is currently playing for Fulham. The left-back is not only very adept at defending, but he also causes plenty of issues for opposing teams with his attacking talent. If the Dutch let him roam freely down the left flank on Saturday, then they could end up being burnt. We look forward to seeing how he fares against a pretty strong Dutch defence
